Where were you born?
Philippines.
When did dance come into your life?
Dancing came into my life unexpectedly, but it was a moment that changed everything. It all started when my sister Candace’s ballet studio closed down, and we were recommended Ucan2 Dance Studio. There, we met Simon, a fantastic ballet teacher who was highly regarded. I would usually sit off to the side, watching Candace in her ballet class, content to do my homework. But Simon had other plans. He wouldn’t let me just sit there! He insisted that I join in with the rest of the girls, even though I was the only guy in the class! Haha.
Then, one day, when Mum was late picking us up after Candace’s class, something happened that would change my life. Harry and Marie were teaching a kids’ Ballroom and Latin class at the time. Marie noticed us watching the class from the sidelines and came over to ask if we wanted to join in while we waited for Mum. Without hesitation, we jumped in. From that day forward, I was hooked. The rhythm, the movement, the energy! It was love at first step. I fell in love with the art and sport of dancing, and it became a passion I’ve carried with me ever since.
Who was the most influential person in your life?
My Mother,
My mother is truly a remarkable woman! Wonderful, beautiful, and with a heart of gold. She worked tirelessly, holding down three jobs to support my sister and me, always putting our needs first. She knew how much we loved dancing, and no matter how hard things got, she made sure we could follow our dreams. Her selflessness and unwavering love have shaped the people we are today, and I am forever grateful for all the sacrifices she made for us. I love you Mama!
Also, Harry.
Harry was more than just a mentor to me, he was like a father. He watched me grow, offering guidance, support, and wisdom along the way. With his encouragement and example, he helped shape me into the man I am today. His presence in my life wasn’t just about teaching me skills or lessons. It was about showing me what it means to be strong, compassionate, and true to myself. I love you Harry!
What is one fun fact about you?
We’ve got some incredible news to share….. Our family is growing! We are expecting our first baby… and it's a GIRL! We’re over the moon and can't wait to welcome her into the world. Who knows, maybe she’ll be the future Ballroom and Latin Champion we’ve all been waiting for! 💕👶
What was the happiest time of your life?
I was truly happy when I started Ballroom and Latin dancing. It gave me a way to express my movements and emotions through a style that felt natural and freeing. With each step, I found myself progressing, not just as a dancer, but as someone who could communicate through the art of movement. It’s been an ongoing journey of growth, and I’m grateful for every moment of it.
What is your favourite genre or style of dancing?
Latin Dancing.
If you had never learned to dance, what do you think you’d be doing now?
A nurse!
What is one style of dance you wish you learned / could do better?
Ballroom.
What was a time when you felt incredibly proud of your dancing career, as a dancer or as a teacher?
One of the greatest blessings in my life has been the opportunity to travel the world and represent both the Philippines and New Zealand in Ballroom and Latin dancing. It’s been an honour to carry the pride of both countries with me on the dance floor. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of training with and learning from some of the top dancers in the world. Each lesson, each performance, has been a step toward growth, and I’m forever grateful for the experiences that have shaped me as both a dancer and a person.
Why do you teach dancing? What do you get out of it?
I absolutely love teaching because it’s incredible to see the progress in my students. When someone tells me, 'I can’t dance,' or 'I have two left feet,' I see it as a challenge and a chance to help them grow. After just a few weeks, watching them pick up the routine, feel the rhythm, and gain confidence is one of the most rewarding parts of being a teacher. It’s amazing to witness the transformation—from where they started to where they are now and knowing I played a part in that journey is what makes teaching so special to me.
What is your favourite thing about UCan2 Dance Studio?
Everyone is welcome here! We’re all a FAMILY! No matter where you come from or where you’re at in your journey, this is a place of support, growth, and unity. In dance, as in life, we lift each other up and celebrate every step together.
What is your passion, or a favourite hobby, outside of dancing?
I’ve got a few passions outside of dancing too! I’m a huge fan of gaming, especially Apex Legends. One day, I’d love to take it a step further and stream my gameplay online. It’s a fun way to unwind and challenge myself. When I’m not gaming, you’ll probably find me in the kitchen, cooking up something delicious while enjoying a beer or a glass of wine. It’s my way of relaxing and being creative. And of course, I also love spending quality time with my beautiful partner, Mariah. We even make trips to the nail salon together, because why not enjoy a little self-care while hanging out with the one you love?
One piece of advice for aspiring/ beginner dancers?
I’ve always believed in giving everything a go. There’s no such thing as 'two left feet'; everyone can dance if they’re willing to try! Whether you’re just starting out or already experienced, dance is for everyone, and the joy it brings is worth every step. The key is to embrace the experience, stay open, and have fun with it.
What do you value most and why?
Family is everything to me. They are my foundation, my strength, and the ones who lift me up no matter what. Through every challenge and every victory, my family has been there, supporting and loving me unconditionally. Salute di Familia—to family, always.
What’s the most misunderstood thing about being a dancer?
Dancing is not a sport. Actually, it is a sport everywhere around the world but sadly not here in New Zealand. It's not very popular.
What’s your favourite quote about life (or dancing!)
“We dance for laughter, we dance for tears, we dance for madness, we dance for fears, we dance for hopes, we dance for screams, we are the dancers, we create the dreams.”
― Albert Einstein
