- 5 Ways Dance Improves Mental Health
Dance has been a big part of countless cultures since the beginning of time and is well known to improve physical health. But what isn’t so well known is its benefits for our mental health. Whether it is salsa, hip-hop or even just some loose freestyle movements, the mental benefits of dancing are all the same. Here are just 5 of the many ways dancing improves mental health: Reduces Stress. When you dance, your brain releases chemicals such as endorphins, which naturally reduces pain and stress. Dancing can also provide an escape from any negative circling thoughts you may have, as you are forced to be present in the moment and focus on the task at hand. This is an active way of coping with emotions such as stress, benefitting your mental health as you aren’t avoiding nor giving in to them. You may also find that dancing expands your imagination and emotional awareness, helping you solve problems you may be facing personally as your mind develops new ways of thinking. Fosters Connection and Trust. This could be either with yourself, others, or both! Social interaction is crucial for your mental well-being, making you feel a sense of belonging and easing loneliness. With dance, you get to meet new people in class, broadening your social circle, and are more confident outside of class as you are more familiar with connecting to strangers. This helps eliminate social anxiety, bettering all aspects of your life. Improves Self-esteem. Showing yourself your dedication and mastering new skills through dance can improve your confidence and self-worth. You might find you respect yourself more and increase your discipline by committing to classes and continuing to refine your skills. Dance can also help you express yourself, and dance classes are great environments where everyone builds each other up and supports each other! Improves Sleep Quality. Dance is a form of exercise which helps you feel more rested as you exert yourself in different ways, helping you relax better after a long day. This physical exertion reduces sleep onset, which is the time it takes you to fall asleep, and can decrease periods of restlessness throughout the night. Increases Energy Levels. Obviously, better sleep means better energy, but exercise also furthers energy levels due to an increase in oxygen and nutrients in your tissues, triggered by dancing. This helps your cardiovascular system work more efficiently beyond the time of excess movement, sustaining an increase in your energy levels throughout the day and giving you more energy to do other things. Consistent dancing also improves your overall heart and lung health, steadily increasing your energy levels over time without the trigger of a one-off dance class. Because of all these factors, your overall mood improves from dancing, making your, and those around you, lives better. But we get that it may be a bit intimidating to start, so here are some tips on using dance to improve your mental well-being: Take in-person dance classes. You can find local classes by Googling ‘dance classes near me’ (be sure to have your location on) or finding online community groups through Facebook or other platforms to read advice and personal reviews on studios near you. If you’re in Auckland, we recommend trying our Free Intro Class to have a taste of the benefits of dancing without any commitment. Take an online dance class. Whilst dancing improves social skills, we know it is not always feasible for everyone's lifestyle. To combat this and ensure you’re still getting some of the mental health benefits of dancing, we recommend utilising the internet and platforms such as YouTube for free, easily accessible dance tutorials. This allows you to easily tailor your dancing experience to cater towards your ability, time available, or specific goals. For example, you could watch this to learn a range of techniques, or this for a more targeted workout, or try out a wheelchair friendly dance routine because dance has mental benefits for everyone. Dance with yourself. You could also skip the routines altogether and just let yourself move to one of your favourite songs. Find or make an open space in a place where you feel comfortable, turn on the music and let yourself go. Don’t worry about how you look because no one is there to see it! With any way you choose to dance, remember not to be overly critical. You only need to dance because it feels good, don’t worry about making a mistake or others being better than you. The best way to get the benefits of dancing is by having fun!
- 5 facts about Bachata Street Latin Dancing + a BONUS offer!
Bachata, is part of the Street Latin style of dancing; a captivating dance and music style from the Dominican Republic that we teach at UCan2 Dance Studio, in Auckland, New Zealand. From its humble origins in rural landscapes to its forbidden allure, Bachata's history is rich with surprises. Let's uncover five facts about Bachata that will make you want to come along to a Street Latin class and give it a try, or if you know it already, it'll no doubt make you love this dance style even more. 1. Bachata Street Latin Dancing's origins in the fields Bachata is often described as a sensual Latin dancing style. It is even considered a much more intimate dance than Salsa. Bachata originally emerged from the rural countryside of the Dominican Republic in the early 20th century and was considered low-class and associated with rural poverty. It wasn't until the 1980s that Bachata gained mainstream recognition. 2. Forbidden dance In the early days of Bachata, the dance was actually banned in many places, including some parts of the Dominican Republic. It was considered too provocative and scandalous due to its close partner dancing and sensual movements — especially since the music was often played in bars and brothels, with lyrics about romance, sex, and poverty. Despite the ban, the dance continued to gain popularity. In 2010, the Bachata was featured in the dance movie, Step Up 3D, which shows a fun and energetic Bachata dance sequence between the leads, Luke and Natalie. The popular TV series "Love After Divorce" Season 4 Episode 3 on Netflix also uses Bachata to encourage connections among the divorcees. 3. Influenced by other genres While Bachata is known for its unique blend of African, European, and Indigenous influences, it's fascinating to learn that even rock and roll played a role in shaping the genre. In the 1960s, Dominican musicians incorporated elements of rock and roll into Bachata music, leading to a subgenre known as "Bachata Rock". There are also different bachata dance styles such as Dominican Bachata which is embraced across Latin America, Spain, and the USA, covering modern and bachatero styles. Modern Bachata incorporates African, Cuban rumba, and Dominican Bongo Flava with contemporary dance elements. Bachatero Bachata gained popularity in Mexico, Central America, Colombia, and some parts of the USA, with a relaxed pace influenced by bolero, mambo, and tango. We teach Bachata as part of our Improver Street Latin course. 4. Astrological alignment Some Bachata enthusiasts believe that dancing to Bachata music can have a celestial influence. There's a quirky belief that dancing Bachata during a certain alignment of the stars and planets can enhance your dancing skills and emotional connection with your partner. In an article in Reader’s Digest, The Best Workout for You, air signs like Gemini and Libra have a social nature and enjoy companionship. For individuals under these signs, an ideal workout involves social interactions. Partner dances like ballroom, bachata, salsa, or swing are recommended as suitable options, according to Ridout. While this might not have any scientific basis, it certainly adds a touch of mystique to the dance! 5. Bachata therapy In some places, Bachata dance classes are being used as a form of therapy. There’s even a famous line that says Bachata is cheaper than therapy. This unconventional approach involves using the expressive movements and emotional connection of Bachata to help people build confidence, improve their self-esteem, and even work through emotional trauma. It's a unique example of how music and dance can have healing properties. BONUS ~ NEW Latin Styling Shines ~ Bachata! What an amazing week we have had weather-wise. Beautiful sunny days and cold nights - perfect for dancing to warm up. I heard next week is even better as it’s going to rain, so the only sensible thing to do is dance! I will start with the competition in Hamilton. It was a fun and very social event - with the emphasis on the fun part. This competition is mainly aimed at social dancers and medalists, but they do have a few events for competition people too. We have been a bit slow getting going so used this event to blow off the cobwebs, check out the new gear, new routines and have some floor practice. It was the first time we saw David in a tail-suit and it was Archie and Lily’s first outing to the competition floor. It was a very successful event and our team had a wonderful time. I missed it but the videos looked great! The weekend after we had the NZ One Dance Nationals In Wellington. We only had two couples attending but they did leave their mark. Ilia and Kate made it to the B grade finals with some placings, but most importantly, the work they’ve put in is making a big difference to how they danced and looked. This was also David and Alexi’s first major competition as Adults. The plan was very simple - to make their mark early so they don’t have to work months getting up the ranking list. Talk about over delivering, as they won every Latin American event they entered, including Youth Open and Adult Open and A Grade. I was also very happy with their Ballroom. I missed the comp but the video looks great! This week we celebrated Carlo’s birthday. Our staff organised a beautiful cake and the whole Wednesday class, around 80 people, sang to him (their teacher). It was beautiful and heartwarming. I missed it but the video looked great! Our Social and Medal classes are growing rapidly. Our team of teachers is doing wonderfully. We have a new class called Ladies Bachata Shine. It’s Latin for ladies only. Check it out! Next weekend we have our Medal tests. It's so good to see everyone practising. A special thank you to Mai, Chai and Carlo for organising and supporting the practises. They seem to be very happy, noisy and sweaty affairs! Now for some international news ... * Gabriele Goffredo and Anna Matus won another Pro World title. This is a bit special. I have taught them in my past life and also was on a judging panel in Vienna, when they won their very first Amateur World Championship. If you haven’t seen them, check out some YouTube videos. * I would also like to mention the Dance Expo in Italy, which finished with a social dance with 1700 people taking part. I was not there but the video looks great! * Our Stefan (Green) received his doctorate - Sports Science and Technique. So well deserved ... he continues to make us so proud! That’s all for now. Best wishes from Maxi. Keep dancing and see you in the class. (I might not be there but I'll enjoy the videos😜) Unicorn 🦄 p.s. Following us on our socials? Connect with us and all that's going on ... Hello everyone. It’s time for a little catch-up. Term three is in full swing, with a few minor adjustments. Latin Shine styling class is now open to all and runs twice a week - Monday nights and Saturday mornings. It’s growing rapidly and has graduated to the big studio. It’s as though this class is made for our Mini Ninja, Mai, to take!! Gold class had to move to Monday nights - we’re sorry about that. If it’s causing issues please come and see us. New Vogue stayed on Thursday night but is now taken by Jonny Twinkletoes Williams. He has a garage full of winners' trophies and is happy to share his knowledge. All this re-shuffling has given us a few extra private lesson times at prime times. Be quick they go fast! Talking about knowledge and achievements, we need to of course mention our Stefan. Every time we think he can’t make us any more proud, somehow he does. Apart from getting his doctorate this year, he has also topped Team Diablo Academy (Italy) Cum Laude! Photo included. In the dancing world, this is like winning an Oscar. You have to beat the best of the best. It’s been a year since his last trip to NZ …. It’s time for another visit. I am not getting any younger and I need to update my dancing software to year 23! Our roles have changed and now it’s Stefan who keeps me interested, involved and inspired! Ilia and Kate update: After the ACT training camp (a week of fantastic lectures, lessons and practice amongst some amazing dancers) they continued to travel throughout Europe, doing some sightseeing and catching up with family. Photo included. Check out some cool dancing on YouTube. The German Open Championship (GOC) has just finished. This also included both Ballroom and Latin Grandslams. No surprise who won but some of the finalists are new. Check out my Stories on Instagram. I share heaps, you'll enjoy them. Our troops are doing a comp on September 02. Join them for a good day out - it’s at a really nice venue in the city. Actually, it’s being held in St Matthews in the City so, if it runs late, you’ve already had your Sunday morning service! I would also like to moan about the weather! It turns out that my Ducati is a rain whisperer. Every time I am the furthest possible distance from home, it starts to rain. At least we now know I can help when we have our next drought! This is Max at the 70s night party a couple of weeks ago. He's feeling funky. Our next party is Friday September 8th, which is our 30th anniversary - celebrating UCan2 - and the theme is BLUE-BLACK-WHITE. Are you coming? Keep dancing and see you in class. If you are not following us on social media please do! We are very active on Facebook and Instagram, finding for you the best stories and clips from the dance world and UCan2! Instagram Facebook Youtube and Pinterest. That’s all for now, any serious questions talk to Marie, for other stuff, you can talk to me. Fingers crossed for the sun coming out. Best wishes. H. Creating art with dance Art and dance, both expressive in nature, can come together in a unique fusion called paint dancing. Innovative artists use dance movements as part of their creative process to make striking art pieces. As a dancer, you can try to paint dancing too. Imagine dipping your hands and feet in paint and dancing over a canvas on the floor. It could get messy, but the outcome is vibrant, abstract artwork that reflects your unique dance style. It allows you to capture the fleeting beauty of your dance as a permanent piece of art, letting your rhythm and style shine in a whole new way. - Tips for Perfect Latin Dance Shoes
The importance of selecting the right shoes for Latin dancing cannot be overstated. In fact, some of the best dancers in the world attribute their success to their carefully selected shoes. On the other hand, dancers who fail to prioritise their footwear often struggle with slipping, discomfort, and lack of support, ultimately hindering their performance. Don't let your shoes hold you back from achieving your full potential on the dance floor. By taking into account factors such as support, traction, and style, you can find the perfect pair of Latin dance shoes that will not only improve your performance but also keep you comfortable throughout. Read on for expert tips on how to choose the best Latin dance shoes. Style To perform various Latin dances, you need different kinds of shoes. For instance, salsa shoes usually have high heels and ankle support, while tango shoes are more supple and have lower heels. So, before buying any shoes, make sure you know what dance style you'll be performing and which shoes will suit your moves. Typically, dance shoes are lightweight and flexible, which helps dancers maintain balance and stay comfortable for extended periods without getting tired or experiencing pain. If you're searching for diverse Latin dance shoe styles in New Zealand, these stores are worth exploring: Pure Dance Limited Dance Stop Dance2Go Stage Door Dance & Street Wear Material Going for the right material for your Latin dance shoes is key for both comfort and durability. Leather is a popular choice as it allows air to circulate, is sturdy, and can adjust to the shape of your feet over time. Although materials like suede or satin can give you a stylish appearance, they may not last as long as leather. Besides, leather is easy to maintain and can endure heavy use, making it a sustainable option for dance shoes. On the other hand, suede and satin may provide an elegant look but might not be as durable and can be challenging to clean. Ultimately, the decision of which material to choose for your Latin dance shoes depends on your personal preferences and the purpose of use. Heel height The height of the heel on your dance shoes affects your balance, stability, posture, and alignment during movements. High heels can shift your weight forward, causing pressure on the balls of your feet and strain on your ankles, resulting in discomfort, pain, or even injury such as ankle sprains. Heels that are too high can also cause back pain or posture-related issues by making you arch your back or lean forward. To avoid these risks, it's important to choose the appropriate heel height for your Latin dance shoes based on your experience level, the type of dance you'll be performing, and your personal comfort. Starting with lower heels and gradually increasing the height as you become more experienced is recommended, especially for beginners. This can help maintain balance, prevent injuries, and improve overall dancing performance. Fit Finding the perfect fit for your dance shoes requires trying on different sizes and styles. Shoes that are too loose or too tight can cause blisters and restrict movements. The shoes should be snug, with enough space for toes to move freely. To avoid injuries caused by ill-fitting shoes, Latin dancers should break in new shoes gradually, use padding to cushion feet, stretch and warm up before dancing, and seek medical attention when needed. Consulting with a professional shoe fitter is necessary to ensure the best fit. Gradual breaking in of new shoes can prevent blisters, and padding can provide additional protection. Stretching and warming up before dancing can prevent injuries, and medical attention should be sought if there is persistent pain or injuries. Sole The sole of your Latin dance shoes is just as important as the fit. The sole provides traction and flexibility, both essential for executing dance steps and preventing injuries. Shoes with a leather or suede sole are recommended as they provide good traction on most dance floors, while rubber soles may not be as effective and can cause slips and falls. The flexibility of the sole is another factor to consider. Ensure that the sole of your dance shoes is flexible enough to allow proper movement and foot articulation. A stiff sole can restrict your movements, making it difficult to execute complex footwork. On the other hand, a flexible sole allows your feet to move freely, enabling you to execute dance steps with ease and precision. Arch support Good arch support is essential for preventing foot pain and injury during Latin dancing. Look for shoes with built-in arch support to help distribute body weight evenly across the foot, reducing foot fatigue and preventing conditions such as plantar fasciitis or flat feet. Consider your arch type and level of support needed when selecting Latin dance shoes. A professional shoe fitter can help determine your arch type and recommend shoes that provide adequate support. Breathability Breathability is also an important consideration in Latin dance shoes. Shoes with materials like leather or mesh provide good ventilation, reduce moisture buildup, and keep feet cool and dry. Breathable shoes also improve overall foot health by preventing infections caused by bacteria and fungi. By picking shoes with breathable materials, you can ensure that your feet are comfortable, healthy, and free from unpleasant odours. Wrapping up To find the perfect pair of Latin dance shoes, consider several factors, including the dance form, material, heel elevation, fitting, sole, arch support, breathability, and style. Picking the right shoes will enable you to confidently and effortlessly perform your dance moves on the floor. Interested in learning Latin dance or other dance genres? Enrol in Ucan2Dance. - Interview with one of UCan2 Dance Studio's founding principals, Harry Raiend!
Harry was interviewed by Kylie Mowbray-Allen of Hello Media, about the who, what and why of how he started his career in DANCE. Enjoy the read! Q: Where were you born? A: Tallinn, Estonia Q: Tell me about your childhood when dancing came into your life, and why did you start dancing? A: When it comes to dancing, my first teacher Ants Tael. He taught me soo much more than dancing - work ethic, time management, organisational skills, how to behave and good manners. was good for me so they kept bribing me with ‘things’. I can’t remember all but I definitely got a skateboard and a bicycle out if it!! Later years it was the presence of girls that kept my interests up. As you can see, dancing wasn’t the priority … luckily I was good at it! Q: Who was the most influential person in your life? A: When it comes to dancing, my first teacher Ants Tael. He taught me soo much more than dancing - work ethic, time management, organizational skills, how to behave and good manners. Q: Tell me a bit about your tertiary education and how dance was involved? A: I have a Masters degree which covers Dance (all forms) , teaching and business. Dancing covered everything from ballet to folk dancing with main focus on Ballroom & Latin. Soviet era teaching methods are now obsolete (thankfully) apart from psychology which I loved and still use. Business I learnt in a communist country - what more can I say. Q: What was the happiest time of your life? A: When I was holding Leo (*new grand baby) yesterday!! Nothing possibly can compete with that! I’m not really sure how to answer this one. Through my life I’ve been a very positive person who is determined to get on with life. I’ve had extreme highlights in both my personal and dancing life. Q: What is your favourite genre of dancing? A: To begin with I wasn’t keen on the Ballroom although I did well. I wasn’t a born gentleman - my parents were definitely working class and my classmates were all communist elites. They could more easily pull off the gentleman thing. Latin was definitely my favourite but with the development of the Ballroom over the last few decades, it would have been much more up my alley. Q: If you had never learned to dance, what do you think you’d be doing now? A: Some sort of business - I’m creative and always looking for opportunities. Q: Tell me about a time when you knew you’d found your calling? A: My skills have not really always been recognised here in New Zealand so it’s been rewarding to be invited to teach and judge so many places in the world with world champions and finalists lining up to get private lessons. Q: Tell me about a time when you felt incredibly proud of your dancing career? A: I’ve never really been that sort. Not good at blowing my own trumpet. Just do what I do as well as I can wherever I am. Q: Has having a dancing career taken you places you never thought you’d go, and if so, where? A: Most definitely. I’ve worked in Norway, Finland, Estonian, Russia, Romania, Latvia, Lithuania, Belgium, Spain, Italy, France, Austria, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Canada, Australia. I’m sure I’ve left some out. It’s certainly been very interesting, eye-opening and always extending my knowledge. Q: What’s it like, working with your wife?! Do you have a way of sharing the jobs, or do you both do all the things? A: We complement each other very well. We’re a good team. Obviously, as in all businesses, there have been hiccups along the way but we’re good at resolving them and good at encouraging and supporting each other. Q: What is your passion (or a favourite hobby?) outside of dancing. A: Maxi! Surfing, paddle-boarding, being with my dog and family, riding my motorbike. Q: What is your favourite memory of life as a dance studio owner? A: The fact that we own our fantastic building which we designed and built. This certainly wasn’t easy but we are reaping the rewards now - goodness knows how we would have got through major upsets (including COVID) if this wasn’t the case. So much joy seeing old students return after many years and sometimes with their children. The competition couples we’ve developed over the years and their outstanding results are great memories. Q: What do you value most and why? A: My family - I couldn’t do any of it without them - they keep me going. Q: What’s the best thing about Dancesport? A: Friendships (from here and all around the world). I met my best friend when I was 6 years old. We competed against each other, went to University together, and we still text and call daily even though he lives in the other side of the world. Q: What’s the most frustrating t hing about Dancesport? A: Locally, the lack of continuing education of the judges. Q: Over all the decades you’ve been involved, what changes have surprised you the most about Dancesport? A: What has surprised/disappointed me is that not enough has changed here in New Zealand DanceSport compared to the rest of the world. Q: What song are you most enjoying dancing to right now? A: I don’t have an actual favourite. I like music to be upbeat and positive and, if course, with a great beat. I find some music, especially Ballroom, to be dull. Q: What’s the most misunderstood thing about being a dancer? A: That all male danc ers are gay. Nobody should care what they are - they’re simply dancers. Q: What’s your favourite quote about life (or dancing!) A: The mind is like a parachute - it doesn’t work if it’s not open. - Frank Zappa Sometimes you’re the dog and sometimes you’re the tree. G Q: Anything else you’d like to share? A: Hello Media have changed the way we view business and have taken us into this century. They provide us with a view to the future and guidance. We’ve done it all in the past - walking the streets doing Mail drops, yellow pages, cinema advertising, local paper advertising - all costing a lot of money with minimal results. Thanks Harry, it's a pleasure and a privilege to work with UCan2, and loved the insights into you in this read! Kylie, Hello Media.

Take inspiration from the famous friendship between Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, both known for their dancing abilities and use of Latin dance styles in their music. Attend dance parties and socials Dance parties and social events are excellent opportunities to make new friends through dance. Dance party nights are often organised by your local dance studio (keep a watch on our socials for our party nights!) and they're such great ways to get people together, dancing, socialising and having fun. In New Zealand, we also have a lot of general dancing at dance competitions around the country, so that's a great way to watch other dancers compete, and also to get up and stretch your legs at intervals, and practice floor craft as there are often many dancers also having the same idea about stretching their legs! Click here to find out when and where. Join a dance troupe or group Joining a dance troupe or group is an excellent option for dance enthusiasts who are passionate about their craft and want to connect with like-minded individuals. These groups often perform at local events and competitions, creating a strong community of dancers. Moreover, being part of a dance troupe provides opportunities for skill refinement and constructive criticism, contributing to growth as a dancer. Studies show that being part of a dance troupe has a positive impact on a dancer's life. Be open and friendly To make friends through dance, it's essential to be open and friendly. Start by smiling, making eye contact, and initiating conversations with others. You never know who you might meet, and forming new friendships could be just a few steps away. So, be social and put yourself out there - you won't regret it! Get involved in the UCan2 Dance Community Joining a dance class or troupe is a great start, but immersing yourself in the dance community takes it to the next level. Participating in workshops also offers a chance to advance your abilities by learning from seasoned dancers. - Mastering the dancefloor: three must-have Ballroom Dancing essentials
Are you ready to waltz, tango, and quickstep your way across the ballroom dance floor? Ballroom dancing is a beautiful art form that requires a blend of physical and mental skills to create a stunning performance. Whether you're a newbie or a seasoned pro, mastering the essentials of ballroom dancing is key to becoming a well-rounded dancer. So, buckle up, grab your dancing shoes, and let's dive into the exciting world of ballroom dancing! Posture First things first, let's talk about posture! It's a critical aspect of ballroom dancing that can make or break your performance. Perfecting dance posture exudes confidence and elegance on the dance floor, and it also makes it easier for you to move, balance, and control your body. When you’re showing off your moves, keep your head up, shoulders relaxed, back straight, and weight distributed evenly on both feet. Remember to preserve the natural curves of your spine for a graceful and elegant performance. Footwork Next up, it's all about the footwork! In ballroom dancing, footwork is a fundamental aspect that can showcase your precision and grace as a dancer. To achieve good footwork, you need to execute steps accurately with proper timing and rhythm. Paying attention to the placement of your feet, and the rhythm of the music, and practising regularly can help you improve your footwork skills and elevate your overall dance performance. Watch this video to practise your footwork in ballroom dancing for balance and smooth moves. Lead and follow Now, let's talk about the heart of ballroom dancing - lead-follow. This technique is all about communication between the lead dancer and the follow dancer, as the lead dancer guides the follow dancer throughout the dance. Good lead-follow depends on trust, communication, and practice. To perfect this technique, both dancers must be in sync with each other, creating a smooth and fluid dance. Looking for some lead-follow techniques to try out? Check out this tutorial video on leading and following! Good posture, precise footwork, and solid lead-follow techniques are crucial components of ballroom dancing, affecting your overall performance. To excel in ballroom dancing, prioritise mastering these techniques and consistently practice them. By doing so, you can achieve the poise and refinement of a true ballroom dance star. - Where does dancing rank in exercise?
Dancing has long been a part of day-to-day life for many humans, from dancing randomly when your favourite music plays on the radio, to dancing with friends, having a little boogie in the kitchen, learning to dance in schools, performing in competitions, and also for exercise. YES, dancing can be and is a form of exercise! Have you ever heard of ZUMBA? Belly Dancing? Hip Hop? All dance classes have their own unique reasons for being great ways to exercise, and without any doubt, dancing is one of the best (and most enjoyable) workouts there is. Most people would agree, their favourite way to workout would have to be the type where you don’t even notice the exercise because you’re having so much fun. From grooving with a partner to popping and locking across a studio to pirouettes or hip gyrating, dance is an excellent example of a way to have a fun, sneaky cardio workout! Humans from all over the world have developed their take on the concept of dance, and there is an endless list of dance styles to learn and enjoy. We'll share that in our next blog! Tell us what dance styles you've tried! Is dancing good for your health? Dancing can be many things, and as a form of exercise is definitely one of them! According to Julie Granger, a Paris-based International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) personal trainer, “dancing is the ultimate workout.” Among other things, dancing gets your heart in the mood and pumping. It also makes you happy, and energised. Dancing can make you sweat! In turn, this takes out your body's fats and toxins without you needing to lift heavy gym weights or count calories! Move your entire body and have fun! It's more beneficial for your body as a whole, and for your mental health, too! Here are 3 ways dancing can improve your health: Dancing is good for your mental health Dancing can help you get your mind off the day's dramas, and transport you to an entirely different mood and environment, which is what makes dancing so great for your mental health. According to research, dancing can decrease anxiety and depression, and help boost a person’s self-esteem! There’s even a type of dance that’s being used to treat depression. It’s called Dance Movement Therapy. 2. Dancing makes your heart sing! Dance can be done by anyone, anywhere, whether you're in a wheelchair, have limited mobility, or just need to dance in your head. Dancing is FREE, needs very little space, and it really can make your heart sing with joy! If you want a healthier, happier heart, get dancing! You don’t need to be a professional dancer or be taking regular lessons or classes to make your heart happy, all you need is your time and commitment to dance and exercise. (Taking classes and lessons will certainly make your enjoyment of dancing transported to a higher level, as your technique and ability improve!) According to a study, “people who engaged in moderate-intensity dancing were 46% less likely to develop heart disease.” 3. Dancing helps with good posture Because you’re moving your entire body while dancing, it can help reduce your back pain, muscle cramps, and even osteoporosis. Photo from NZ Herald Something that's unique to dancing, is that your age, gender, and sexuality are irrelevant... age is no barrier! Your kids can learn to dance and develop their self-esteem and confidence from an early age, and alternatively, you can take up dancing when you're a Great Granny! Age is just a number, literally! The more you dance, the more you become a HEALTHIER version of yourself. Subscribe to our email list and receive your monthly copy of "The Beat" for our latest news and updates here!
- 10 great reasons why you should learn to dance!
When I started writing this blog post, I realised I could actually have listed about 100 reasons why you should start dancing ... because dance is something that both Harry and I have been doing, in one form or another, for most of our lives. Dance is in our blood! I started dancing at age 7 when my mother finally gave in and said “she can do it for a year and get it out of her system“!! Ha! That year turned into more than half a century of dancing, and I have taught literally thousands of people to dance, from Ballet to Ballroom, Latin and New Vogue, both in New Zealand and Internationally. Harry's dancing career started even younger, "I think I was 4. My daycare had a folk dance group and we where preparing for a big outdoor folk dancing festival. It’s a big deal in Estonia with tens of thousands taking part and it’s been going on for hundreds of years." You'll have noticed, that almost every baby will start to move when the music plays. They just do it! For some little people that love of moving continues and they're lucky enough to have parents who are able to take them to dance classes. For some, that love of dance continues to grow, and a life filled with dancing will bring them endless joy and possibilities ... it may even result in being their chosen career, as it has for both of us. From dancing professionally to teaching others to dance, there are endless opportunities, and as the Oriental proverb quite aptly states, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life." Dance is quite simply, a form of communication, and a universal language expressed through movement, sound, rhythm, beats. As we've judged and examined all over the world, we've found that when there's no common language between you, DANCE is all you need! It gives you the freedom and unique ways to express yourself without words. Here are 10 great reasons why you should start dancing: 1. Confidence Dance is a great way to gain and increase confidence! Are you worried that you'll look silly if you dance? Just like anything that you do for the first time, you can feel a little awkward, but the more you dance, the more confident you become. Dance is an excellent way for us to express ourselves. One thing we love about our free intro nights, is watching people arrive and some have pure joy on their faces, some a little trepidation, but by the end of the class, all are amazed at what they've achieved, and they can actually DANCE! 2. Get to know people while you dance. Are you interested in meeting new people? One of the most enjoyable aspects of social dancing is meeting new people. You will improve your social skills and meet people with similar interests; and you never know, you might just find a whole new dancing family, a new dancing bestie, or even meet your future partner! (NB: we're not a dating agency!) It's exciting to meet new people while learning to dance! You can join us for our Free Introduction Classes - find out more here. 3. Get healthy, and move your body! You burn calories when you dance because you move your body. In addition, dancing improves your cardiovascular system and strengthens your muscles and bones. Dancing can keep you in shape or even helps you lose weight, so whatever your size or ability, dancing is good for your health and gets you moving your body. 4. Stay fit You use all your muscles when you dance, making it a great way to stay fit. Combining strength and cardio exercises, this training allows you to achieve a total body workout. Because dancing is exercise, it naturally strengthens your bones and muscles. Your strength will increase over time, and you will be able to dance longer. Physical activity and exercise can prevent diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease and lower the risk of osteoporosis. Dance lessons enhance your strength and fitness, which will help you become more physically fit. Start dancing and improve your health today! 5. Dancing makes you happier You can make yourself happy by dancing because dancing generates endorphins, which make you feel good. This helps you release stress. Test it out and see for yourself. Join a free Intro class! 6. Improves balance, posture, and coordination The most significant benefit, however, is that you are teaching your body to move in more unique and instinctive ways. Dancing improves your balance, agility, coordination, and responsiveness. When you attend classes, we teach you how to improve the position of the body, arms, and legs and how to step correctly and hold your head and shoulders. Consequently, you will improve your posture in dance and other areas of your life. As we age, balance becomes more important than ever to avoid falls, and something that's wonderful about the styles of dancing we teach, is that age is no barrier. You're never too old to learn to dance! Studies demonstrating that dance, over other forms of physical activity like walking and running, significantly improve cognitive function in older adults, as well as improved memory recall, verbal fluency, better balance, motor coordination and posture are all benefits for older adults who dance. 7. Academic development From as young as six years old, we teach children to dance. (Other forms of dancing, children may start earlier). Dancing can improve memory, develop rhythmical awareness which in turn helps your child with reading, writing and maths. What?! Yes, learning, thought, creativity, and intelligence don't just come from the brain alone, but from the entire body. Movement combinations increase memory, order, and sequencing skills. Investing in dance classes for your child is more than investing in a physical activity. You are making an investment in your child’s education, the benefits of which extend well beyond the classroom. 8. Discipline and Focus As with life, dance classes present challenges, from learning choreography to finding the beat and staying in time. The benefit of learning choreography and achieving goals early on will be evident for dancers. Achieving goals (in dance class, as in life!) requires much hard work and sweat, and your work ethic carries over into your dance class, too. Turning up on time, committing to a course, dancing with a partner, learning to lead or be lead, all require self-discipline, commitment and focus. 9. Special Occasions One of our most popular requests, is from couples getting married, and wanting a dance lesson so they can wow their guests. We offer packages for wedding couples, as some want just some simple basic dance steps to feel more comfortable dancing at their wedding, while others want something elaborate to surprise their guests with. We've had loads of fun teaching entire groups to dance on a hens night, or teaching the bridesmaids and groomsmen dance routines. Find out more about our wedding packages, here. 10. Improve Your Mental Health Dance can actually relax you! It can reduce stress, ease tension, and free you from everyday worries. Ask any of our dancers and they'll tell you the same thing, if they come to dance after a difficult day at work, they leave after class feeling 100% different to they way they did when they arrived! The music and the movement will take you away, elevate your mood, and raise your spirits. On the dance floor, all the frustrations of the day can disappear. The act of dancing is truly a rejuvenating experience! Additionally, with the social dancing that we teach; Ballroom, Latin American, New Vogue, Street Latin (for example dances such as the Jive, Cha Cha, Foxtrot, or Waltz), you're required to TOUCH. While you're not required to actually "hug" your partner, you need to be in dance hold, and this position is similar to the position used in a hug. Therefore, you get the comfort and security of a hug without being intimate. Hugs are genuinely therapeutic. Find out more about the mental health benefits of dance, here. Take more chances, dance more dances, and don't think you can't do it because at UCan2, you can too! If you haven't begun your dance journey yet, what are you waiting for?
